What to paint part 2

Art

This entry is a sequel to a previous entry I had written – What to paint?

I enjoy painting very much but sometimes its hard to know what to paint or where to start. Some questions you might want to ask yourself, and you may find yourself coming to a conclusion of what you want to paint.

Do you have a style? Realistic or abstract?
Do you like bright colors or dark colors?
High contrast or faded?
Do you have a palette of colors you’d like to use?
How big do you think you want the painting to be?

Do you have things that you enjoy seeing visually? Write them down.

For example, I love trees, stars, circles, letters, ampersands and mermaids

If I wanted to I could google any of those things and possibly come across something that inspires me. If you’re photoshop savvy you could manipulate an image and then paint it.

However, some might like to work from memory, and not have something to look at while painting. You could visit sites like tumblr and search keywords such as “art” “painting” or “creative” and let it inspire you. This is a great exercise just to get the creative juices flowing… especially if you do not have anything particular in mind.

I had done a painting of a bare tree recently, I think trees without leaves are beautiful! But I feel as though bare trees are always seen in the dim winter, with snow on the ground and cloudy skies. I do not feel that many can see this beauty, so I made my painting with lots of a color and a silhouette of a bare tree. My style is not realistic… it never has been. I lean toward the abstract/cartoonish style. It’s just me… and I’ve even been told I am a better abstract artist that anything else.

I came across this really amazing 360 video of the Sistine Chapel. The art history nerd inside my head is saying yay! I was very happy to come across this, I would love to see it someday. Take a look, even if you do not know what it is appreciate that every image was painted… by hand!

some wicked artwork

Art/ Design

Happy October!! A few weeks ago I saw Wicked on Broadway – with my mom. I also saw it around when it first came out back in 2004 but I really wanted to take my mom to see it. It really is such an amazing show especially if you are a fan of the Wizard of Oz. I think anyone who sees it loves it and I noticed on deviant art there was so much artwork! I figured to kick off the fun/costume/horror season why not start October with some Wicked artwork? Each picture links to the artist’s page. Thank you to those artist who let me feature them on my blog!! 🙂

the year of the muppets

Art/ www

About 2 weeks ago I ordered this shirt from Threadless – a really awesome Muppet shirt of Kermit but when you look closely, you can see ALL the characters he is made out of. I just love it. I can’t even believe it has sold out already, well actually I can because who doesn’t love the Muppets? I think every 80’s baby can agree… The Muppets are LEGENDS. I think if you really want the shirt you can just visit the “bring em back” section and you can vote for it to be re-printed again.
I’m even more excited because a handful of known musicians got together and remade songs from the Muppets and called it The Green Album. I haven’t bought it yet, but its wishlisted. My birthday is in less than 2 months so I will just be patient!! It will also get me pumped for The new Muppet movie coming out this Thanksgiving.

Inkling – I want one!

Art/ Technology

There is a new tool out by Wacom – WOW do I wish I had this in college! I have a tendency to draw things, take pictures with my cell phone and then trace it in illustrator. (Yes I am too lazy to even get up and scan them) This saves a lot of steps. I would really love to try it out and see how well it works. If you have any experience with this let me know. I would love to see it in action and possibly share it here. They will be available mid-september so keep checking the Wacom site for more updates.

Featured Artist – Jayson Lilley

Art

Jayson Lilley has some really amazing paintings with bright colors and high-contrast. I think that is what made me love his work so much was the contrast – the cow is definitely my favorite but his landmark paintings are great too. He is over in London but when he has a show in New York I will be first in line! Take a look at his website or follow him on twitter – @iamjaysonlilley.

From iconic London landmarks like Battersea Power Station, the Trellick Tower and South Bank to everyday subject matters like mopeds, buses and English breakfasts – Jayson Lilley’s art makes the ordinary look extraordinary.
With his signature bold colours, limited palette and illustrative approach, Lilley’s graphic novel style certainly packs a punch.

Today, I Remember

Art

I had been watching THE VOICE a few weeks back and Vicci Martinez (one of my favorite contestants) had mentioned how her dad had pursued music but gave it up to raise his kids. He has passed on and she was saying how she is pursing music in memory of him. I thought that was so SWEET because I feel the same way. Two years ago today my dad passed away — and I am writing this not to mourn him but to remember him. I too feel that I am pursuing art and having him live on through me. He did not pursue art as a career but always had it as a hobby. From drawings, paintings, photography even decorating cake he was GENIUS. I remember being little and he always had his camera in his car and we’d be driving somewhere and he’d randomly pull over to photograph something. It was very inspiring because now that I am older, I find myself doing the same thing. I rarely go anywhere without a camera. This is a painting he had done back in 2007…

There is a short story I wrote in college about 4 months before my dad passed away – it is a TRUE story but I thought it would be nice to share here. It occurred the summer before I went into 9th grade – about 12 years ago.

I hope you enjoy my short story…

What to paint?

Art

A few weeks ago I bought a canvas and new paint brushes. Its been about a year since I’ve painted anything. Now what to paint??? I can’t seem to figure out what I want to do. I seem to have the same problem when I may layouts for myself >.< go figure. I looked to etsy for some inspiration. Although some aren't paintings, they are still inspiring to me. I see it as creative caffeine! What do you think I should paint? I have a whole naked wall in our apartment... I need to fill it up! I was thinking of something more pop-art, or even abstract. Too much real-ness makes me nuts. I like looking at it, but doing it? Thats a different story. Some Etsy art that inspires me...
