Westfield Logo – Sideways?

Design

If you have ever been in the Northern Part of NJ visiting or living around the area you know about the Garden State Plaza. One of the biggest malls on the east coast one visit and it is a mall you won’t forget. I’ve only been going to this mall over the last three years and not too long ago they put up signs near some of the driving entrances. It was interesting when they first put it up – I wasn’t used to them being there. Something about it bugged me though. It felt almost as if the logo is upside-down. Should italic type be placed sideways – ever?! I don’t know – but the way this looks bothers me and I hope I am not the only designer that can agree.

I wonder if it was a question whether or not they should place it that way – of course that is there logo so they couldn’t change it. Westfield is not just Garden State Plaza but a group of shopping centers. The only other option would be to put it horizontal and the sign would have to be a lot wider. But of course I am just ranting off the top of my head here — I have no idea about any of this. But it bugs me every time I see it at the mall, am I the only one who thinks italic type should not be placed sideways in such big form?

Designers and Typos

Design

How does this happen? You design a sign for a client and neither you nor the client realize a word is spelled wrong. Ok so maybe anyone can mix up “Physic” and “Psychic” but still, someone should have noticed this along the line. It is a fairly simple sign – not much writing to have to use ‘spell check’. I saw this at the state fair — and there wasn’t just 1 sign there were 4. FOUR SIGNS. How could neither the designer or client notice this? Boggles my mind.

The Book Of American Types 1941

Design/ Technology

Last weekend I went to visit my mom, she lives an hour north of me in the town where I grew up. I had gone to community college starting back in 2003 and I always past this vintage shop, located in a building that used to be a barn. For years I drove by without ever stopping in, even though I had interest to. So this time when I went home for some reason I kept thinking about it — almost like it was calling me! So I decided to take a trip and FINALLY check it out after all this time.

I spent a good hour or so in there. Since I am a huge fan of collage and cutting things out I asked if they had any old books. I figured I could find something interesting and cheap enough to tear apart and use! But instead I came across a collection of old type books from the 1940s! I could not tell you how much the little kid in me wanted to jump up and down! I spoke to the man that works there he told me they belonged to a graphic designer named Murray Stein who lived and worked in New York City. Apparently he hoarded everything he owned and when he passed away his wife sold all of his work, books and supplies. I could not find any information on him but the man in the store told me he worked completely in the original style of graphic design – long before computers. And once technology started to take over the field, he decided to retire. The only thing that bugs me is the book has a sticker on it that says “Lou Kashins” and it is also written on the inside of the book too. Who knows, maybe Murray borrowed it and never gave it back to Lou. Either way, I am glad it ended up in my hands. I took some photos to share with you… this is only 1 of 3 books I came across. I will show the others in future posts.

Goodies – just for you!

Design

I’ve added scans to the “goodies” section. Right now there are a lot of vintage, girl magazine cut outs, and some random stuff. As I add more I’ll post updates each time I add something new. I’m hoping to create some vectors and PS brushes in the future to add to this “goodies” section. I may also have some downloadable PDFs for things you can print too. Here is a preview of some of the current scans:

If you have any ideas of something you’d like me to scan, let me know!

New Layout… Finally

Design/ Rambling

I had been wanting to make a new layout for a while, but I had a bad case of “creative block”… well not so much creative block more like “happy-with-what-I-made” block…. if there is such thing? I find it funny that I have no problem creating things for others but when it comes to making something for myself, and I am soo picky, and I get tired of staring at it so I start from scratch 400 times. I guess it is just good creative exercise in the end.

First I started out with this…

I wanted to show art and design in one but I felt it looked too… little kid-ish? So then I came up with this…

And I didn’t like that after a while either… so I headed over to my favorite artist’s site for some inspiration: www.misprintedtype.com aka Eduaro Recife (who I am secretly in love with)…

I used his free font named “Shortcut”:

Along with a few of his brushes as well and a vector from YSR1 I came up with this…

(also what you see above but this is without the pattern background)

Within the next week I will be adding content in the “goodies” section… so keep a look out for that!

Featured Artist… ???

Design

So each week I have been having “Artist of the week” but I have been thinking of changing it to “featured artist” since it is hard to get responses from people (on a timely basis) when I ask them if they’d like to be artist of the week. I’ve been so busy lately, so I haven’t had time to look for artists I’d like to feature. Not to mention all the artists have been guys… I would LOVE to feature some lady artists! So if you’re interested leave a comment and let me know. I’m working on a lot of other content for the site as well, so once I get that up I’m going to include a page where anyone can submit a message if they would be interested in being a “Featured Artist”. But for now, comments will do.

I’m working on a few projects right now… a logo being one. When I was searching for some inspiration, I came across this photo and it made me laugh so I thought I would share. I got it off softpedia.com and the image credit is Federico Fieni.

Some favorite album art

Design

When I was younger CDs were my thing, long before ipods, or before I even knew what an mp3 was my discman went wherever I went. I knew from a young age I wanted my focus to be art – before I was even in high school. I used to think “I want to create CD covers for musicians”. I didn’t even know the word for that kind of art – which I now know as “graphic design” or “digital art”. Most mixed in with photography many musicians have had awesome album art and these are just some of my favorites. What’s your favorite album art?

No Doubt – Return of Saturn

Tool – Laterlus

The Beatles

Three Days Grace – Life Starts Now

Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King

Eminem – Relapse

Enigma – Voyager

Evolution of my Psycho poster

Design

A week or so ago I was looking through my BFA folder from college. Of course I’ve discussed them many times in the past – my horror movie posters. This time when I looked at my Psycho poster I realized I saved it each time I made drastic changes. So I wanted to share the “Evolution of my Psycho Poster”. I had started it in Photoshop and then brought it into illustrator to add text and grunge effects. I had drawn the eye in photoshop using my wacom tablet. It took me quite a long time to get to the final one. Hours and hours of work, only because at the time I was not set on a “style”. While making this specific poster it hit me to do them all in a grunge/stressed style. I wanted to do them all a similar way I just could not find how to make them look like a series. Took me 2-3 months to figured it out. It was a really stressful experience but once I figured out my style, every poster I designed after that it wasn’t as hard or time consuming. I was able to focus more on actually creating than wondering what style it would be. It ended up working out really well, because all my professors were very pleased. Especially since I had thought of this thesis so last minute. All my posters were 27 x 39inches, thankfully I have a MBP so it only took a minute or two to save these big files! I don’t think windows+photoshop could handle it ;]. Here is the progress of my poster – originally created last February 2010.
