Vintage Lady Magazine Ads

Design

Happy 1.11.11! I’d like to thank Web Designer Aid for including me in their 45 Girly Geeks to Follow on Twitter. And with that I decided to make this entry a girly one as well! Sometimes being a hoarder can be a bit of a good thing. I found a PILE of vintage magazines my dad had saved, many from well before the 80s when I was born. I LOVE looking at vintage design, to see not only how far we’ve come but to also laugh at the silly slogans from back then. Here are some fun *girly* ads I scanned from a 1948 Silver Screen Magazine. Who ever knew there were such thing as “Brownettes or “Liquid Liptone”. These will soon be a part of my scan site I am working on.

Love and a Postcard

Design/ www

Speaking of OnePageLove.com in my last entry, turns out my portfolio is in today’s entry on their site! I got their email when I woke up this morning, they let me know they added my page. What a great way to wake up on a Monday! I know I’ve been really really really slow with entries lately, but I’ve been busy with projects! And those projects pay me so they get a little bit more attention 😉

About a month ago I made my own postcard to pimp out this blog (just my cool way of saying advertise). They came out pretty nice, I had them printed at Overnightprints.com. They do print nice postcards with pretty UV coating and all BUT let me tell you, if you make a mistake and don’t align it right, they WON’T care, so make sure your preview of your project looks EXACTLY how you want it to! I’m going to give some of these away to whoever wants one I also had magnets made too. The magnet looks like the black side of the postcard with the words. I’m only going to give away 3 of the magnets, so if you want it email me fast! Send me your name/address and let me know if you want a postcard or both. [email protected].

Another Portfolio Layout

Design/ www

With lots of inspiration from OnePageLove.com I created my own one page portfolio. I used this Lightbox2 script. I tried a ton of different scripts and did not like any of them, I just keep going back to it. The only con that bothered me is that if used with another script, they interfere with each other and I’m not enough of a code dork to figure out why. But having more than one script wasn’t really necessary since I was trying to keep it simple anyhow. With some love of the color purple and a fun typeface I bring you this…

postcard design

Design

Recently I designed a postcard for a lawyer in NYC. He basically gave me text and left how it looked up to me. I was happy he let me have some creative freedom, some people tell you exactly what to put and I’m thinking “Well who is the artist here??”. I had a lot of fun working with him and even later meeting him. He wanted 4,000 of these made, and I order the prints too! Oh yes and I got to design them pins, which I had not done before. It was overall a great experience and here I share the digital and final product.

Methane Studios & DMB

Design/ www

This year I attended quite a few Dave Matthews Band shows (I’m a long time fan). I was so tempted to purchase some of the posters they had at each show. The designs were so awesome, and unique for each individual concert. I thought to myself “Now that’s an awesome job, designing posters for DMB!”. I came to find that they are designed by Methane Studios. They have a very unique style and I can’t stop staring. I just want to absorb every last bit of every design. This is a site all artists should check out and even if you aren’t artsy you will enjoy viewing their portfolio. Here are some DMB examples (these are just SOME of my favorites). To view more of these check out their DMB portfolio.

1 photo 4 filters 5 wallpapers

Design

Fall has always been my favorite season, although flip flops and sunshine is so much fun in the summer, I’ve always felt fall is the more creative season. With the leaves changing colors, and the sun setting earlier, bundling up in layers and wearing Uggs! But even lately more and more I’ve loved to just even look at trees and leaves. Trees, even without leaves are awesome. The way the branches flow out each in their own individual way. Leaves each have their own unique patterns too, and seeing them up close is even more amazing. One rainy day in the car there were a few leaves stuck to the passenger window while driving (my mom was driving, I do not photograph and drive!). I usually always have my Canon PowerShot handy in my bag, I decided to snap some shots. I took quite a few pictures and even my mom noted how much I was entertaining myself just by taking photos of a leaf stuck to the window. From that I decided to create some wallpapers. I edited the original 4 separate times, using 4 filters. So simple yet each photo now has a different mood and feel to it. Of course if you are a fellow designer you probably are familiar with these filters, but I figured I’d share with everyone. You can download and use all these wallpapers here.

Infinite Possibilities

Design

And now for a post outside the design world, but I have to share! At the end of September Mike Dooley [writer] was holding a contest on facebook/twitter. I was one of the winners, and I got his book Infinite Possibilities newly in paperback autographed and sent to me. I was and I still am very excited. I just received my book about a week ago, and although I have not started reading I am very excited to. (I’m still in the middle of another book). Mr. Dooley was also one of the writers from The Secret and also has his own line of books, dvds and even a fun website. I wake up to a “note from the universe” every day, thanks to him. Definitely worth checking out, and if you enjoy learning about the law of attraction like I do, his books are not only informing but he makes it fun. WOOHOO! 🙂

“Room Service? Hi. It’s me again, Christie. That’s right, in the Penthouse Suite. If you wouldn’t mind, could we please have another round of desserts, some more wood on the fire, and, uh, some new springs for the trampoline?” – Notes from the Universe

Frankenstein and Wax

Design

From my collection of old Horror Movie Posters I re-created, I made some wallpapers to share in celebration of Halloween. Both have a grungey worn style, which was consistent with all the posters I did. I truly enjoyed that project, and rather than just have it sit in a file folder on my mac, I figured I’d share! A Frankenstein wallpaper and The Mystery of the Wax Museum wallpaper. Feel free to download and use as you like, but please give credit. Although I still don’t know what I’m going to be for Halloween, hopefully these can inspire you in some way. Please let me know your thoughts on these 🙂 Still have many more horror posts to come…
